How are you feeling? I ask because it’s not always an easy question, especially if you’ve been carrying old hurts or worries for a while. Maybe life feels heavy, or a past experience keeps popping back up….sometimes out of nowhere. If so, you’re not alone. I’ve spent years helping people just like you find their feet again, and lately, I’ve been doing a lot of work with something called Hypno-EMDR therapy for emotional healing.
Maybe you’re thinking, “Hypno-what?” Fair question! Imagine chatting over coffee and you say, “So, what have you been up to lately?” I might reply, “Oh, I’ve just finished a CPD course on hypnotherapy and EMDR.” You’d probably look at me and ask, “Really? What’s EMDR?” It’s a way of helping your mind work through tough stuff, and when you mix it with hypnotherapy, it becomes this much gentler, more supportive way to move forward.
What Is Hypno-EMDR Therapy? (And Why Not Just EMDR?)
Let me keep this simple and honest. Hypno-EMDR therapy is all about blending the benefits of hypnotherapy (think: relaxation, building confidence, feeling safe) with the “reprocessing” part of EMDR, A therapy that helps your brain untangle memories or feelings that have gotten a bit stuck.
You might see people online talking about EMDR therapy on its own….sometimes it can feel quite full-on to dive straight into old memories. That’s why I like to use hypnotherapy first, to help you get comfortable, feel safe, and know you’re in control. Only when you’re really ready do we gently bring in some of the EMDR techniques….like following a light, tapping, or noticing sensations….so you can process things in a smoother, less intense way.
It’s important to mention: I’m not an EMDR-only therapist or offering EMDR as a standalone. Instead, I use EMDR techniques within my clinical hypnotherapy sessions, following a trauma-informed, compassionate approach. This gives us the best of both worlds….calm preparation, then gentle, guided emotional healing.
Why Try Hypno-EMDR?
You might wonder, “Why add hypnosis—why not just stick with EMDR, or just hypnotherapy?” Here’s what people have told me after sessions:
- “I felt calmer before we even started processing memories.”
- “It felt less scary to go at my own pace.”
- “Afterwards, it was like my mind stopped playing that old tape over and over.”
Here’s what we do differently with this dual approach:
- First, we settle in. We spend real time building a sense of safety, using relaxation and grounding (so you’re not just thrown in the deep end).
- Then, we gently process the tough stuff. Bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or gentle tapping) is much easier to handle when you’re already relaxed.
- You stay in control. This is about you feeling empowered, not overwhelmed.
How Can It Help?
Think of all the ways our minds can get tangled up—worries, old grief, panic attacks, even physical stuff like tension or tummy troubles. Hypno-EMDR can help with:
- Anxiety and Panic Attacks (helping you get back in the driver’s seat)
- Trauma Recovery (processing painful memories without reliving them like a bad movie)
- Fears and Phobias (from flying to driving to public speaking)
- Grief and Loss (giving you space to process change)
- Body-Linked Troubles (like chronic pain, IBS, or headaches that seem tied to emotions)
- Confidence and Self-Esteem Issues (building new, positive beliefs about yourself)
It’s not just for “big T” trauma; so many of us quietly carry around “little t” struggles from past events, and they can shape how we react to life even years later.
What’s a Session Like?
Let’s take away the guesswork. In the first chat, we’ll talk about what’s been going on for you, your hopes, and what kind of pace feels right. Some people like in-person sessions here in Sheffield; others prefer online (which honestly works brilliantly—you can even wear your comfiest pyjamas if you like).
At the start, we focus on feeling settled. We might practice relaxation, guided imagery, or create a mental “safe place” together—simple techniques that often help clients feel ready and a little braver. That preparation makes the next part—a bit of gentle EMDR—much easier. I’ll guide you using techniques like tracking a moving finger, gentle tapping, or sound. You never have to dig up memories you’d rather leave untouched; we work at your pace, with your comfort front and centre.
Clients usually say things like, “I thought it would be harder,” or “I actually feel lighter.” That’s the magic of pairing these therapies.
In-Person & Online – You Choose
I get that life is busy. Some people prefer to visit my chamber at the Sheffield Wellness Centre to enjoy their session in a calm and serene environment. Others feel safer at home or live elsewhere in the UK (or beyond). Good news: the results are just as strong either way. I offer both options so you can fit therapy into your life, not the other way around.
