Hot Flushes and Night Sweats in Menopause

Published: April, 2025

Do sudden waves of heat overwhelm you out of nowhere? Do you find yourself waking in the middle of the night drenched in sweat, unable to settle back to sleep? These experiences are all too familiar to many women going through menopause—but they don’t have to take over your life. With the right support, relief is not only possible but achievable.

Hot flushes and night sweats are some of the most discussed symptoms of menopause, but did you know they aren’t always caused by hormonal changes? Understanding “what causes hot flushes apart from the menopause” can reveal hidden triggers and expand your relief options.

I’m Farah-Naz Khan, a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Yoga Therapist, and Wellness Coach based in Sheffield. Recently, I became a Certified Hypno Menopause Practitioner®, empowering me to combine hypnosis, mindfulness, and CBT to support women during menopause. This, along with my unique offerings like hypnotherapy massage services and wellness coaching, allows me to provide a holistic and tailored approach to menopause care.

If hot flushes, night sweats, and similar symptoms are disrupting your life, keep reading to learn more about their causes, simple yet effective remedies, and how my services can help you reclaim your well-being.

What Are Hot Flushes and Night Sweats?

Hot flushes are intense waves of heat that spread through the body, often accompanied by sweating, flushing, and a racing heart. Night sweats are similar, but they happen while you’re asleep, often waking you up and leaving you cold and uncomfortable as the sweat dries. These symptoms can last a few seconds or linger for several minutes. For some women, they’re occasional; for others, they’re frequent and debilitating.

During menopause, hot flushes and night sweats are primarily linked to hormonal changes. A decline in oestrogen affects the hypothalamus, the body’s temperature regulator, causing it to misread normal body temperatures as too high and triggering heat-releasing responses like sweating.

However, it’s important to remember that hormones aren’t always to blame. Exploring “what causes hot flushes apart from the menopause” can uncover other factors at play.

What Causes Hot Flushes Apart from the Menopause?

Although menopause is usually the primary cause, other conditions or triggers might be contributing to your symptoms. Identifying these can significantly improve your quality of life.

Stress and Anxiety

High stress levels can trigger hot flushes. When stressed, your body releases adrenaline and cortisol, which can heat the body and mimic menopause symptoms.

Thyroid Disorders

Conditions like hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid becomes overactive, can cause hot flushes and night sweats. This is because thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, which directly affects body temperature.

Medications

Certain drugs, such as antidepressants, diabetes medications, and even hormone therapies, can cause hot flushes as a side effect. If you suspect this is the case, consult your healthcare provider.

Lifestyle Triggers

Spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, and smoking can all provoke hot flushes and night sweats. These stimuli can dilate blood vessels and raise body heat. Avoiding these triggers may reduce the frequency or severity of your symptoms.

Other Medical Conditions

Sometimes, hot flushes and night sweats can signal an underlying issue like an infection, obesity, or certain types of cancers like lymphoma. If your symptoms persist despite obvious lifestyle changes, seeking medical advice is essential.

Managing Hot Flushes and Night Sweats

When you’re in the grips of these symptoms, it can feel like nothing helps. However, there are many practical steps you can take to regain control. My holistic approach combines gentle, effective methods, nutritional strategies, and self-care practices.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is at the heart of my practice. Scientific research has shown that hypnotherapy can reduce the frequency of hot flushes by up to 74%! During hypnotherapy sessions, I guide clients into a deeply relaxed state where we address stress triggers and reframe unhelpful subconscious patterns contributing to symptoms. Hypnosis can also empower you to manage anxiety, sleep better, and regain control over your emotional and physical well-being.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga is incredibly effective for balancing hormones and reducing stress. Breathing exercises, for example, are a key tool in managing hot flushes. Calming techniques like the “cooling breath” (Sheetali pranayama) help regulate body temperature and calm the nervous system. I provide yoga therapy tailored to clients’ specific needs, combining movement, mindfulness, and relaxation to tackle symptoms holistically.

Wellness Coaching

Many women find their symptoms reduce significantly with small, sustainable lifestyle changes. One area we explore during my Hypno Wellness Coaching sessions is nutrition and its role in managing symptoms. Foods rich in phytoestrogens, like soy, flaxseeds, and lentils, can mimic oestrogen in the body, providing some relief. “Menopause and vitamins,” including Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, and magnesium, are additional tools to keep symptoms in check. These micronutrients can support hormonal balance, alleviate fatigue, and improve mood.

Hypno-Massage Services

My HypnoGlow-Me! massage candles and hypnosis audios offer an innovative way to combine relaxation and symptom relief in one unique experience. During a hypno-massage session, you’ll receive physical stress relief while listening to tailored hypnosis recordings, helping you stay calm and centred even after the session ends.

Natural Remedies and Practical Solutions

If you’re looking for additional “menopause relief remedies,” here are a few easy ideas that fit into any lifestyle.

  • Cool Compresses
A cool washcloth on your neck or a gel cooling pack can offer quick relief during a hot flush.
  • Layered Clothing
Wear lightweight, breathable layers so you can easily adjust to changes in temperature.
  • Sleep Hygiene
Swap heavy duvets for lightweight sheets and keep your room cool with a fan or open window.
  • Hydration
Drinking water throughout the day helps regulate your body’s temperature. Herbal teas like peppermint can also have a cooling effect.
  • Herbal Supplements
Natural remedies like black cohosh, sage, and red clover are commonly used to reduce hot flushes. However, always check with a healthcare provider before starting any new remedy.

Does Menopause Itching Go Away?

While hot flushes tend to take the spotlight, symptoms like itching and dryness also affect many women. A decline in oestrogen can affect the skin’s hydration and elasticity, causing discomfort. The good news? Yes, “does menopause itching go away” has an answer. With consistent moisturising, staying hydrated, and using skin-nourishing products like those enriched with Vitamin E, itching often subsides. Hypnotherapy can also play a role by addressing the emotional stress that might exacerbate the sensation.

When to Seek Professional Help

If your symptoms feel unmanageable, it’s time to consult a specialist. Persistent hot flushes, night sweats, or itching could indicate an issue that requires deeper investigation, such as thyroid imbalances or underlying health conditions.

Working with a Certified Hypno Menopause Practitioner® ensures a professionally tailored approach to relief. My services combine hypnotherapy, yoga, and wellness coaching to address symptoms from every angle, ensuring holistic and lasting progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Interlude Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration combined with therapeutic instructions. In everyday life, we naturally enter this state without even realising it—whether it’s getting lost in a book, losing track of time while driving, or being completely absorbed in social media. This state, known as ‘trance,’ is not about swinging watches or stage tricks; it’s a practical and therapeutic tool.

During a Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy Session, I will guide you into this focused state to help you replace negative programming with positive alternatives. Through this process, we can effectively address issues like anxiety, fear, insomnia, and much more, empowering you to make lasting changes.

What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?

In a hypnotherapy session, you’ll typically be seated comfortably in a chair or lying on a couch with your eyes closed. I will guide you into a state of deep relaxation and heightened focus, known as a trance. In this receptive state, we can work together to transform how you perceive and handle your issues.

In your first session, I’ll explain how the brain works, how problems can develop, and what can be done to help. You’ll receive a relaxation audio to support the work we do in our sessions. As you relax, I’ll offer tailored suggestions and new ideas. While in trance, you may be asked to speak briefly or acknowledge experiences, but your thoughts remain private.

In subsequent sessions, we’ll start by discussing the positive aspects of your week and the progress you’ve made. You’ll be encouraged to envision how you’d like your life to be and identify small changes that could improve your situation. This sets the stage for deeper work in trance, guiding you toward lasting change. Throughout the process, you’ll remain in control and aware of your surroundings, experiencing a deep sense of calm and relaxation that many clients find highly enjoyable.

Is it Safe?

Rest assured, hypnotherapy is completely safe, and you are always in control. You cannot be made to do or say anything against your will, and if any suggestion doesn’t feel right, you can simply ignore it. If you were to feel uncomfortable at any point, you would naturally become consciously aware and could easily bring yourself out of the relaxed state. There’s no risk of getting stuck in a trance, and you’ll remain fully aware and safe throughout the session.

Many clients notice positive changes even after just one session, as unhelpful thought patterns start to fade away. While these initial shifts may be subtle, over time, clients often experience a heightened sense of calm, empowerment, and an overall more positive outlook on life.

How Do I Prepare For My Sessions?

Come with an open mind, believing in the effectiveness of hypnotherapy and a genuine desire to make positive changes. It’s beneficial to schedule sessions for times when you can fully engage with the hypnotherapy process.

Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session to avoid cancellation fees. Your commitment and respect for appointment times ensures the best outcome for your therapy.

Feeling tired is perfectly okay, as it may facilitate relaxation and deeper engagement with the therapy. However, please refrain from attending sessions if you are intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. For safety reasons, hypnotherapy cannot be conducted if you’re already in an altered state of consciousness. In such cases, sessions will be rescheduled, and cancellation fees may apply.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions required varies depending on your specific needs and the nature of your issue. Typically, clients find resolution within six to eight sessions. However, I always aim to ensure your treatment is both efficient and effective, minimising the number of sessions needed.

Smoking Cessation and Stopping Vaping are usually addressed in a single extended session, while certain Phobias can often be treated in four sessions. The Virtual Gastric Band Weight Loss Programme and HypnoBand® Weight Loss System are typically conducted over four to five sessions.

How Much Will It All Cost?

If you’re concerned about the price, know that hypnotherapy is more affordable than you might expect, especially when compared to the cost of not addressing your issue and of talking therapies alone.

Consider the true cost of allowing your problem to persist unchecked. Investing in your well-being now can lead to long-term benefits and a happier, more fulfilling life.

Our Initial Consultation (IC) is priced at £75 (60 Minutes) and conducted online.  Subsequent Sessions are £85 (50-60 Minutes) and conducted online or face-to-face in Sheffield.  Take advantage of Discounted Rates when you book 6 Session Packages, allowing you to save money while investing in your health and happiness.

I have partnered up with Network and can provide a 10% discount for Teachers, Carers, Health Service and Charity workers.

What Are My Next Steps?

Our journey begins with your Initial Consultation (IC) which you can conveniently book and pay for online.

This session is an opportunity for you to discuss your issue, explore your current feelings, personal goals, and ask any questions you may have. We’ll assess whether hypnotherapy is a suitable option for you and ensure you feel comfortable working with me.

We’ll explore the best approach for your unique situation, agree on a tailored treatment plan, and I’ll offer my professional opinion on the likely number of sessions needed.

You’ll also get a Free MP3 Audio which will support the work we do in-between sessions. Please DO NOT listen to this MP3 or any other Hypnosis Audio including Customised Hypnosis Audios whilst driving or operating any kind of equipment.
