What is HypnoBirthing? A Guide to Calm and Conscious Childbirth

What is HypnoBirthing

Published: April, 2025

Pregnancy and birth are profound experiences, often filled with joy, excitement, and, understandably, moments of apprehension. For many expectant parents, the balance between excitement and anxiety can feel overwhelming, especially when contemplating labour and childbirth. But what if there was a practice that could help you approach these events with calmness, confidence, and even empowerment? This is where HypnoBirthing comes into play.

HypnoBirthing, an increasingly popular method in the UK and worldwide, offers mothers and their birth partners tools to create a calm and conscious birthing experience. It uses a combination of self-hypnosis, breathing techniques, relaxation, and positive affirmations to reduce fear and pain during labour. This article explores how HypnoBirthing works, its benefits, and how you can incorporate it into your birth plan.

Understanding HypnoBirthing

What is HypnoBirthing?

At its core, HypnoBirthing is a childbirth preparation method that focuses on reducing anxiety, fear, and pain associated with labour. It is grounded in the idea that the human body is naturally equipped to give birth and that much of the pain during labour stems from fear and tension, rather than the process itself.

The method was developed by hypnotherapist Marie Mongan in the late 1980s. Inspired by natural childbirth advocates, Mongan combined hypnotherapy practices with childbirth education to create a programme designed to empower pregnant individuals. HypnoBirthing centres on the belief that when the mind and body are relaxed, childbirth can unfold naturally and sometimes with fewer complications.

The Techniques Behind HypnoBirthing

HypnoBirthing relies on several techniques to create a sense of calm and control. These include relaxation, focused breathing, visualisation, and positive affirmations.

1. Relaxation and Self-Hypnosis

Relaxation is key to HypnoBirthing. By entering a deeply relaxed state, mothers can manage their physical responses to labour while calming their minds. Self-hypnosis techniques encourage participants to remain present and focused, helping them work through contractions, or what HypnoBirthing enthusiasts prefer to call “surges.”

Hypnotherapy enables you to tap into your subconscious, reframing your perception of pain and fear. For example, rather than bracing against intense sensations, HypnoBirthing promotes a mindset that views these sensations as purposeful and manageable.

2. Breathing Techniques

One of the most practical tools taught in HypnoBirthing classes is hypnobirthing breathing techniques, which help regulate the breath during contractions. Effective breathing plays a vital role in keeping the body oxygenated, which can facilitate labour and reduce stress.

Two prominent breathing methods are:

  • Calm Breathing (or Relaxation Breaths): Deep, controlled inhalations through the nose and long exhalations through the mouth help you stay centred and calm.
  • Surge Breathing (or Wave Breaths): During contractions, mothers are taught to breathe deeply and exhale fully, synchronising with the rhythm of their body. This eases tension and supports the birthing muscles.

3. Visualisation

Visualisation techniques involve forming positive mental images to foster an environment of calm. HypnoBirthing recommends visualising peaceful scenarios, such as waves rolling up a shore or a flower blooming, to aid focus during labour. Some mothers find it helpful to imagine their baby descending gently through the birth canal or envisioning the moment they’ll hold their baby for the first time.

4. HypnoBirthing Affirmations

Positive affirmations are a core component of HypnoBirthing. These are simple, empowering statements mothers repeat to themselves during pregnancy and labour. They may include phrases such as:

  • “I am strong; I am capable.”
  • “My body knows how to give birth.”
  • “Each wave brings me closer to meeting my baby.”
  • “I trust my body and my baby.”

Such hypnobirthing affirmations help mothers reframe negative thoughts and replace them with confidence and optimism, creating a positive birthing environment.

The Science Behind HypnoBirthing

You might be wondering if HypnoBirthing really works. While experiences will vary, scientific research provides evidence supporting its benefits in reducing anxiety, enhancing birth outcomes, and improving maternal satisfaction.

Reduced Anxiety and Fear

Studies indicate that relaxation techniques like HypnoBirthing can significantly reduce anxiety levels during labour. By decreasing stress hormones (like adrenaline) and encouraging the release of oxytocin (a hormone critical to labour progression), HypnoBirthing fosters a more relaxed state conducive to natural childbirth.

Pain Management

Several trials suggest that HypnoBirthing can lower the perceived intensity of pain during labour. According to research published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia, self-hypnosis and relaxation significantly reduce labour pain, offering an alternative to pharmacological methods like epidurals.

Shorter Labour and Lower Intervention Rates

Some findings highlight that individuals practising HypnoBirthing may experience shorter labours, less reliance on medical interventions (e.g., inductions and forceps), and a greater likelihood of vaginal deliveries. The emphasis on relaxation and rhythmic breathing creates an environment where labour can progress more smoothly.

Who Can Benefit from HypnoBirthing?

HypnoBirthing is a versatile approach suitable for various birthing scenarios. Whether you’re planning a hospital birth, a home birth, or are uncertain about your preferences, this method can be adapted to fit your needs. Those hoping for a natural, drug-free birth often adopt HypnoBirthing, but it can also complement other pain relief methods if desired.

Additionally, individuals who’ve experienced a traumatic birth may find HypnoBirthing helpful in rebuilding confidence and trust in the birthing process.

Practising HypnoBirthing in the UK

Taking HypnoBirthing Classes

To learn HypnoBirthing techniques, many mothers in the UK enrol in courses led by certified practitioners. These are available both in groups (in-person or online) and as one-to-one sessions. Classes often include dynamic discussions, hands-on exercises, and resources like guided meditations or affirmations.

You’ll learn about the stages of labour, the physiology of birth, and techniques to involve your birth partner actively. The courses also provide practical tools to create an ideal birthing environment, including using aromatherapy or dim lighting. Sessions often run over several weeks during the second or third trimester.

HypnoBirthing and Birth Partners

Birth partners also play a pivotal role in HypnoBirthing. Partners are taught how to support the mother effectively by mastering breathing cues, massage techniques, and affirmations. This shared experience strengthens the bond between parents and creates harmony during the birthing process.

Addressing Common Concerns

Does HypnoBirthing Guarantee a Pain-Free Birth?

While some mothers report minimal discomfort, it’s important to keep realistic expectations. HypnoBirthing doesn’t promise pain-free labour but helps manage it more effectively, reducing fear and anxiety, which often exacerbate sensations of pain. The goal is to feel empowered, calm, and in control.

Is HypnoBirthing Suitable for Everyone?

HypnoBirthing can be adapted to most pregnancies, including those requiring planned medical interventions. However, the approach requires commitment and practice. Regularly practising the techniques with a qualified professional is key to experiencing its benefits.

Is HypnoBirthing Evidence-Based?

Numerous studies validate the techniques within HypnoBirthing. For example, a 2016 review from The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews identified the positive impact of hypnosis and relaxation on childbirth outcomes, including reduced pain and improved maternal satisfaction.

Why Choose HypnoBirthing in the UK?

Frequently Asked Questions

Interlude Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration combined with therapeutic instructions. In everyday life, we naturally enter this state without even realising it—whether it’s getting lost in a book, losing track of time while driving, or being completely absorbed in social media. This state, known as ‘trance,’ is not about swinging watches or stage tricks; it’s a practical and therapeutic tool.

During a Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy Session, I will guide you into this focused state to help you replace negative programming with positive alternatives. Through this process, we can effectively address issues like anxiety, fear, insomnia, and much more, empowering you to make lasting changes.

What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?

In a hypnotherapy session, you’ll typically be seated comfortably in a chair or lying on a couch with your eyes closed. I will guide you into a state of deep relaxation and heightened focus, known as a trance. In this receptive state, we can work together to transform how you perceive and handle your issues.

In your first session, I’ll explain how the brain works, how problems can develop, and what can be done to help. You’ll receive a relaxation audio to support the work we do in our sessions. As you relax, I’ll offer tailored suggestions and new ideas. While in trance, you may be asked to speak briefly or acknowledge experiences, but your thoughts remain private.

In subsequent sessions, we’ll start by discussing the positive aspects of your week and the progress you’ve made. You’ll be encouraged to envision how you’d like your life to be and identify small changes that could improve your situation. This sets the stage for deeper work in trance, guiding you toward lasting change. Throughout the process, you’ll remain in control and aware of your surroundings, experiencing a deep sense of calm and relaxation that many clients find highly enjoyable.

Is it Safe?

Rest assured, hypnotherapy is completely safe, and you are always in control. You cannot be made to do or say anything against your will, and if any suggestion doesn’t feel right, you can simply ignore it. If you were to feel uncomfortable at any point, you would naturally become consciously aware and could easily bring yourself out of the relaxed state. There’s no risk of getting stuck in a trance, and you’ll remain fully aware and safe throughout the session.

Many clients notice positive changes even after just one session, as unhelpful thought patterns start to fade away. While these initial shifts may be subtle, over time, clients often experience a heightened sense of calm, empowerment, and an overall more positive outlook on life.

How Do I Prepare For My Sessions?

Come with an open mind, believing in the effectiveness of hypnotherapy and a genuine desire to make positive changes. It’s beneficial to schedule sessions for times when you can fully engage with the hypnotherapy process.

Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session to avoid cancellation fees. Your commitment and respect for appointment times ensures the best outcome for your therapy.

Feeling tired is perfectly okay, as it may facilitate relaxation and deeper engagement with the therapy. However, please refrain from attending sessions if you are intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. For safety reasons, hypnotherapy cannot be conducted if you’re already in an altered state of consciousness. In such cases, sessions will be rescheduled, and cancellation fees may apply.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions required varies depending on your specific needs and the nature of your issue. Typically, clients find resolution within six to eight sessions. However, I always aim to ensure your treatment is both efficient and effective, minimising the number of sessions needed.

Smoking Cessation and Stopping Vaping are usually addressed in a single extended session, while certain Phobias can often be treated in four sessions. The Virtual Gastric Band Weight Loss Programme and HypnoBand® Weight Loss System are typically conducted over four to five sessions.

How Much Will It All Cost?

If you’re concerned about the price, know that hypnotherapy is more affordable than you might expect, especially when compared to the cost of not addressing your issue and of talking therapies alone.

Consider the true cost of allowing your problem to persist unchecked. Investing in your well-being now can lead to long-term benefits and a happier, more fulfilling life.

Our Initial Consultation (IC) is priced at £75 (60 Minutes) and conducted online.  Subsequent Sessions are £85 (50-60 Minutes) and conducted online or face-to-face in Sheffield.  Take advantage of Discounted Rates when you book 6 Session Packages, allowing you to save money while investing in your health and happiness.

I have partnered up with Network and can provide a 10% discount for Teachers, Carers, Health Service and Charity workers.

What Are My Next Steps?

Our journey begins with your Initial Consultation (IC) which you can conveniently book and pay for online.

This session is an opportunity for you to discuss your issue, explore your current feelings, personal goals, and ask any questions you may have. We’ll assess whether hypnotherapy is a suitable option for you and ensure you feel comfortable working with me.

We’ll explore the best approach for your unique situation, agree on a tailored treatment plan, and I’ll offer my professional opinion on the likely number of sessions needed.

You’ll also get a Free MP3 Audio which will support the work we do in-between sessions. Please DO NOT listen to this MP3 or any other Hypnosis Audio including Customised Hypnosis Audios whilst driving or operating any kind of equipment.
