Dealing with Pet Bereavement

Published: March, 2025

At a glance, some people might not understand it. The staggering grief of losing a pet. For those who have shared their lives with animals, this loss is not just the end of a routine; it’s the departure of unconditional love, companionship, and laughter from your everyday life.

Grieving a pet isn’t just about letting go; it’s about learning to carry their memory in a way that helps you regain balance. If you’re struggling with this deep and personal emotion, know that your feelings are valid, your pain is understood, and support exists to help you heal.

This article offers insights, practical advice, and meaningful strategies for coping with pet loss, while also exploring professional and thoughtful ways to address grief.

Why Losing a Pet Hits So Hard

Losing a pet isn’t like losing a possession or a favourite hobby. The bond between humans and pets goes far beyond the surface. Studies have documented how pets act as emotional anchors during challenging periods of life. They’re there for us after a bad day, offering comfort and companionship. They don’t judge, and their love is unconditional.

When this unique bond is severed, many experience a sense of emptiness that feels unbearable. What makes pet bereavement particularly painful is the societal misunderstanding surrounding it. You might hear remarks such as, “Just get another dog” or “It was only a cat.” This lack of empathy often leads grieving pet owners to push down their feelings, leaving the sorrow unexplored and unresolved.

But grief is as natural as the love you felt for your pet, and addressing it is critical to your emotional well-being.

Tips for Dealing with Pet Loss

Dealing with pet bereavement is rarely a linear process. You might move fluidly between shock, sadness, and acceptance. Here are thoughtful strategies to help you through this complicated experience.

Accept and Honour Your Loss

Acknowledging your grief is the first step toward healing. Take the time to mourn, cry, or talk about your pet with loved ones. Suppressing your emotions will only delay the healing process. Consider planning a small memorial to celebrate their life and the bond you shared.

Write About Your Feelings

Sometimes, expressing emotions is easier through writing than speaking. Journalling about your pet and your feelings can help you clarify your emotions. It’s also a way to preserve memories and bring some cathartic relief during tough moments.

Create a Tribute

Creating a lasting memorial for your pet can be a beautiful way to channel your grief into something positive. This could be planting a tree in their honour, crafting a photo album, or engraving their name on a keepsake.

Emotional Healing for Pet Bereavement

Healing from pet bereavement involves not just managing your emotions, but also allowing space for growth and reflection. Emotional healing is often a gradual process, but it can become a reality with the right strategies.

Surround Yourself with Support

Don’t hesitate to lean on friends, family, or online support groups when grieving. Speaking with others who have experienced a similar loss can reduce feelings of isolation.

Try Professional Grief Therapy

Grief therapy for pet loss is a growing area of emotional support. Therapists trained in bereavement can help you untangle the complex feelings that come with losing a pet. Hypnotherapy, for instance, is an excellent tool for reframing grief and finding acceptance.

Focus on Self-Care

Grief can be physically and emotionally draining. Make an effort to take care of yourself. Eat nourishing meals, get rest, and incorporate mild physical activity like yoga or walking to keep your body and mind grounded.

Gifts for Pet Bereavement – A Thoughtful Gesture

Struggling to support a friend or relative dealing with the loss of their pet? Thoughtful gestures can go a long way in expressing care and solidarity. Consider the following ideas for pet bereavement gifts.

  • Custom Pet Portrait
Capturing the image of their beloved pet in a custom portrait can provide great comfort. It’s a sentimental keepsake that they can cherish forever.
  • Jewellery with Their Pet’s Name
A necklace or bracelet engraved with the pet’s name acts as a discreet but deeply personal token to honour their memory.
  • Memory Scrapbook Kit
Help them compile photos, stories, and memorabilia of their pet into a scrapbook that allows them to focus on joyful memories.

Thoughtful gifts not only validate their pain but offer tangible ways to preserve the bond they held dear.

Dealing with Pet Bereavement in the UK

The UK offers various avenues for pet bereavement support to make sure no one feels isolated.

Pet Bereavement Counselling Services

Professional pet bereavement counselling provides a safe, non-judgmental space to discuss your feelings and learn strategies to move forward. Seeking expert support reassures you that you don’t need to face this grief alone.

Pet Bereavement Leave

While pet bereavement leave is not yet legally mandated in the UK, increasingly compassionate employers offer flexible leave to employees grieving the loss of a pet. This support acknowledges the emotional impact of pet loss and allows individuals time to heal.

Online Emotional Support Groups

Digital support groups have become lifelines for individuals managing grief after pet loss. These communities allow you to connect with like-minded individuals, share memories, and feel understood.

Understanding How Hypnotherapy Can Help

If your grief feels overwhelming, professional therapies like hypnotherapy might be a solution. Hypnotherapy works by addressing the grief stored deep within your subconscious. It redirects negative thought patterns and allows your mind to focus on the loving memories you shared with your pet.

Farah-Naz Khan, a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist based in Sheffield, UK, uses a holistic combination of Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy, CBT, and Mindfulness Techniques to help clients heal. Her personalised hypnotherapy approach ensures each client feels heard, supported, and cared for.

Many clients find relief and profound emotional shifts after just a few sessions, enabling them to progress toward acceptance and emotional balance.

Practical Coping Mechanisms

Managing grief after pet loss is a deeply personal experience. However, practical strategies can contribute to emotional restoration.

Limit Exposure to Triggers

Avoid situations or routines that amplify your grief temporarily. For instance, if you walked your pet every evening, consider changing your walking route or timing.

Develop New Routines

Replacing activities with new habits can help manage the empty moments left behind after your pet’s loss. This might include starting a fitness class, volunteering, or engaging in a new hobby.

Seek Professional Help When Needed

If your grief feels unmanageable, seeking professional help is a positive step. Experts can guide you toward emotional resilience using tailored approaches.

Finding Closure

The bond between humans and animals is timeless, and the grief of losing them reflects the magnitude of that love. Remember, healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means finding ways to honour your pet’s memory while rebuilding your emotional balance.

Whether journalling, creating a meaningful memorial, or seeking professional therapy like hypnotherapy, each step forward is a testament to your resilience. The pain may never fully disappear, but with the right support, it will evolve into cherished memories that bring more joy than sadness.

Your Journey Toward Healing

If you’re feeling lost after the passing of your pet, allow yourself permission to grieve and heal. With patience, care, and support, you can learn to move forward while keeping their love close to your heart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Interlude Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration combined with therapeutic instructions. In everyday life, we naturally enter this state without even realising it—whether it’s getting lost in a book, losing track of time while driving, or being completely absorbed in social media. This state, known as ‘trance,’ is not about swinging watches or stage tricks; it’s a practical and therapeutic tool.

During a Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy Session, I will guide you into this focused state to help you replace negative programming with positive alternatives. Through this process, we can effectively address issues like anxiety, fear, insomnia, and much more, empowering you to make lasting changes.

What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?

In a hypnotherapy session, you’ll typically be seated comfortably in a chair or lying on a couch with your eyes closed. I will guide you into a state of deep relaxation and heightened focus, known as a trance. In this receptive state, we can work together to transform how you perceive and handle your issues.

In your first session, I’ll explain how the brain works, how problems can develop, and what can be done to help. You’ll receive a relaxation audio to support the work we do in our sessions. As you relax, I’ll offer tailored suggestions and new ideas. While in trance, you may be asked to speak briefly or acknowledge experiences, but your thoughts remain private.

In subsequent sessions, we’ll start by discussing the positive aspects of your week and the progress you’ve made. You’ll be encouraged to envision how you’d like your life to be and identify small changes that could improve your situation. This sets the stage for deeper work in trance, guiding you toward lasting change. Throughout the process, you’ll remain in control and aware of your surroundings, experiencing a deep sense of calm and relaxation that many clients find highly enjoyable.

Is it Safe?

Rest assured, hypnotherapy is completely safe, and you are always in control. You cannot be made to do or say anything against your will, and if any suggestion doesn’t feel right, you can simply ignore it. If you were to feel uncomfortable at any point, you would naturally become consciously aware and could easily bring yourself out of the relaxed state. There’s no risk of getting stuck in a trance, and you’ll remain fully aware and safe throughout the session.

Many clients notice positive changes even after just one session, as unhelpful thought patterns start to fade away. While these initial shifts may be subtle, over time, clients often experience a heightened sense of calm, empowerment, and an overall more positive outlook on life.

How Do I Prepare For My Sessions?

Come with an open mind, believing in the effectiveness of hypnotherapy and a genuine desire to make positive changes. It’s beneficial to schedule sessions for times when you can fully engage with the hypnotherapy process.

Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session to avoid cancellation fees. Your commitment and respect for appointment times ensures the best outcome for your therapy.

Feeling tired is perfectly okay, as it may facilitate relaxation and deeper engagement with the therapy. However, please refrain from attending sessions if you are intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. For safety reasons, hypnotherapy cannot be conducted if you’re already in an altered state of consciousness. In such cases, sessions will be rescheduled, and cancellation fees may apply.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions required varies depending on your specific needs and the nature of your issue. Typically, clients find resolution within six to eight sessions. However, I always aim to ensure your treatment is both efficient and effective, minimising the number of sessions needed.

Smoking Cessation and Stopping Vaping are usually addressed in a single extended session, while certain Phobias can often be treated in four sessions. The Virtual Gastric Band Weight Loss Programme and HypnoBand® Weight Loss System are typically conducted over four to five sessions.

How Much Will It All Cost?

If you’re concerned about the price, know that hypnotherapy is more affordable than you might expect, especially when compared to the cost of not addressing your issue and of talking therapies alone.

Consider the true cost of allowing your problem to persist unchecked. Investing in your well-being now can lead to long-term benefits and a happier, more fulfilling life.

Our Initial Consultation (IC) is priced at £75 (60 Minutes) and conducted online.  Subsequent Sessions are £85 (50-60 Minutes) and conducted online or face-to-face in Sheffield.  Take advantage of Discounted Rates when you book 6 Session Packages, allowing you to save money while investing in your health and happiness.

I have partnered up with Network and can provide a 10% discount for Teachers, Carers, Health Service and Charity workers.

What Are My Next Steps?

Our journey begins with your Initial Consultation (IC) which you can conveniently book and pay for online.

This session is an opportunity for you to discuss your issue, explore your current feelings, personal goals, and ask any questions you may have. We’ll assess whether hypnotherapy is a suitable option for you and ensure you feel comfortable working with me.

We’ll explore the best approach for your unique situation, agree on a tailored treatment plan, and I’ll offer my professional opinion on the likely number of sessions needed.

You’ll also get a Free MP3 Audio which will support the work we do in-between sessions. Please DO NOT listen to this MP3 or any other Hypnosis Audio including Customised Hypnosis Audios whilst driving or operating any kind of equipment.
