Hypnotherapy for Grief & Loss: A Case Study
Interlude Hypnotherapy

Grief is a deeply personal journey marked by emotional upheaval following significant loss. Whether facing the death of a close family member, friend, partner, or beloved pet, or dealing with the end of a relationship, grieving is a painful yet normal experience that touches us all at some point in life.
This case study explores the therapeutic journey of my client, Jane, a 64-year-old woman who has been grappling with heightened anxiety triggered by the unexpected loss of her husband over a decade ago. Jane struggled with insomnia, often waking in the night to check outside her curtains. She lacked motivation and felt extremely anxious about selling the marital home they had shared for over 30 years in order to downsize. Additionally, Jane developed an increased fear response to thunder and lightning, frequently seeking refuge under her bedsheets. These challenges significantly impacted Jane’s daily functioning and overall quality of life.
Understanding Grief: The Seven Stages
Grief unfolds uniquely for everyone, involving various stages that may overlap or occur in different sequences:
- Shock and Disbelief: Often beginning with a sense of disbelief as the reality of the loss sinks in.
- Denial: Manifesting as an attempt to reject or minimize the painful truth of the loss.
- Guilt and Shame: Involving feelings of responsibility or regret regarding the loss.
- Anger and Bargaining: Characterized by anger at the unfairness of the loss and attempts to negotiate or find meaning.
- Depression, Loneliness, and Reflection: Bringing forth deep sadness, loneliness, and introspection about shared memories.
- Reconstruction or Working Through: Marked by adjusting to life without the loved one and integrating the loss into personal growth.
- Acceptance: Not about forgetting but learning to live with the loss, fostering healing and adaptation over time.
The Initial Consultation
The therapeutic journey began by creating a safe and supportive environment where Jane could explore her emotions freely. Trust was pivotal in establishing effective sessions, and Jane’s ability to ask questions about the process bolstered her confidence and comfort in our work together.
During the initial session, Jane gained insights into the source of her anxiety through an exploration of brain mechanisms, specifically the primitive vigilant mind. This part of the brain remains hyper-alert to potential threats, even when immediate danger is absent. Jane realized that her heightened anxiety and habitual behaviours, such as nightly checking rituals and fear of thunder and lightning, stemmed from unresolved grief. Understanding these mechanisms helped Jane connect her thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, which was pivotal in her healing journey.
Jane was also provided with a 30-minute Hypnotherapy Relaxation MP3 recording, which she used nightly and sometimes during the day to manage her anxiety levels.
Treatment Plan
Jane expressed that her anxiety significantly impacted her quality of life, hindering her from exploring new opportunities and making new connections. Her goal was to overcome anxiety, regain calmness, and feel motivated to engage fully in life.
A tailored treatment plan was developed, consisting of eight Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) sessions focused on addressing anxiety, improving sleep, and reducing habitual checking behaviours. The approach emphasised setting achievable goals and actions to prevent overwhelm.
Each session incorporated trance to induce deep relaxation, allowing Jane to access her subconscious mind for emotional healing. She found the trance component particularly beneficial in reducing anxiety and promoting inner calm.
Techniques such as the “3Ps” (positive thinking, positive interactions, positive activity) and Anchoring were introduced to empower Jane in her daily life. Cognitive restructuring challenged negative thought patterns associated with grief and anxiety, while solution-focused questions encouraged her to explore her inner strengths and resources.
Guided meditations and hypnotherapy suggestions were tailored to Jane’s current emotional state, effectively alleviating anxiety and enhancing emotional resilience.
Conclusion
Over eight sessions, Jane reported significant improvements in her well-being. She experienced reduced anxiety levels, improved sleep quality, and regained motivation to make decisions and engage in life activities. She no longer sought refuge under her bedsheets during thunderstorms and felt confident enough to plan holidays and social gatherings with friends and family.
Reflecting on her progress, Jane shared
“Working with Farah has been very good and worthwhile. All of the processes involved were clearly explained beforehand, so I was aware of what was going to happen during the sessions. Farah is very easy to talk with and makes me feel at ease. I feel very much that I have benefitted from the sessions. I have found my anxiety levels are easier to deal with when they occur, and this makes me feel more comfortable with life in general. As for changes I have noticed I can say that I am more able to plan in my head ways of dealing with situations if they feel like they are going to make me stressed or raise my anxiety levels. I’m more able to work on relaxing and then dealing with the situation. I would most definitely recommend Farah:-)”
This case study highlights how integrating stages of grief with supportive solution-focused hypnotherapy framework can help individuals like Jane process grief, regain emotional well-being, and find acceptance after significant loss. By focusing on strengths and fostering self-reflection, the therapy created a safe space for healing and personal growth.
