Sex and Intimacy After Menopause

Published: April, 2025

Has intimacy become more challenging since menopause? Are you wondering if your changing body can still experience pleasure and connection in the same way? If you’ve felt uncertain or even hopeless about your sexual well-being after menopause, you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: intimacy can still thrive, and in some ways, it can even improve after menopause with the right approach.

Menopause often brings physical and emotional challenges that affect sex and intimacy. From lowered libido to painful intercourse, these changes may feel overwhelming. However, with the right support, strategies, and mindset, you can overcome these obstacles and rediscover closeness with your partner.

I’m Farah-Naz Khan, a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Yoga Therapist, and Wellness Coach. With my expertise, including my certification as a Certified Hypno Menopause Practitioner®, I help women through the vast changes menopause introduces—including improving intimacy and supporting sexual well-being. This article explores how menopause impacts sex, common misconceptions, and actionable advice to help you reignite intimacy and connection.

How Menopause Affects Sex and Intimacy

Menopause brings significant hormonal changes that can alter the experience of sex and intimacy, but these changes don’t have to mark the end of your sexual well-being. Understanding what’s happening in your body can help you take the first steps toward positive transformation.

Lower Libido

The decline in oestrogen and testosterone during menopause can lead to a reduced sex drive. Many women report feeling less spontaneous desire, which can impact confidence and strain relationships. While this is common, it’s important to remember that there are ways to reignite passion, often starting with honest conversations and intentional efforts.

Painful Sex

“Painful sex menopause” is a common concern among women during and after menopause. With reduced oestrogen levels, vaginal tissues can become thinner, less elastic, and drier, making intercourse uncomfortable or even painful. This condition, known as vaginal atrophy, is experienced by an estimated 50% of postmenopausal women. Though it might feel discouraging, numerous treatments can help alleviate these symptoms.

Changes in Emotional Connection

Menopause doesn’t just bring physical changes; emotional intimacy can also be impacted. Stress, body image concerns, and anxiety about sex can create barriers between you and your partner. Addressing these feelings is crucial for maintaining connection and fostering a fulfilling intimate bond.

Overcoming the Challenges of Sex After Menopause

Intimacy after menopause isn’t just possible; it can become better than before with the right approach. Here’s how you can tackle these challenges and enjoy a thriving sex life post-menopause.

Communication is Key

Open communication with your partner is crucial for maintaining intimacy during and after menopause. Share your feelings, concerns, and desires. Honesty helps your partner understand the changes you’re going through and fosters greater emotional connection.

Many couples struggle to have these conversations, but guided support can help. My Hypno Wellness Coaching sessions provide a safe space for you to explore these emotions, address anxieties, and learn how to communicate openly and compassionately with your partner.

Explore Treatments for Painful Intercourse

If vaginal dryness or discomfort is making sex difficult, consider exploring these solutions:

  • Lubricants and Moisturisers
Over-the-counter lubricants and vaginal moisturisers can provide immediate relief. Silicone-based lubricants, in particular, last longer and are often recommended for menopausal women.
  • Oestrogen Therapy
Topical oestrogen creams, pessaries, or rings can effectively restore vaginal health and reduce discomfort. Speak to your healthcare provider to understand your options.
  • Mind-Body Therapies
Hypnotherapy, yoga, and relaxation techniques can help address the mental and emotional aspects of pain. My integrative practices combine physical interventions with emotional healing, creating comprehensive support for your sexual well-being.

Revitalise Your Libido Naturally

If you’re struggling with lowered desire, these tips can help rejuvenate your libido over time:

  • Physical Activity
Exercise improves circulation, including to sexual organs, and boosts endorphins, which can enhance mood and reduce menopause-related fatigue.
  • Mindfulness and Stress Reduction
Stress often acts as a libido suppressant. Hypnotherapy and mindfulness exercises train the mind to relax, rebuild confidence, and focus on the present moment, allowing you to reconnect with your desires.
  • Balanced Nutrition
Foods rich in magnesium, zinc, and omega-3 can regulate hormones and promote energy levels. Exploring “menopause and vitamins” can help you identify nutritional gaps that may be affecting your libido.

Debunking Myths About Sex After Menopause

There are several misconceptions about sex during and after menopause that contribute to unnecessary fear or shame. Here’s the truth about what’s possible.

  • Myth 1: “Sex has to end after menopause.”
This couldn’t be further from the truth! With the right tools and mindset, many women enjoy fulfilling sex lives after menopause.
  • Myth 2: “Menopause means the end of orgasms.”
Although physical sensitivity may change, many women report improved orgasms post-menopause as they become more focused on quality over frequency and deepen emotional connection with their partners.
  • Myth 3: “Libido loss is permanent.”
While changes in hormones can impact desire, libido can often be revitalised with lifestyle adjustments, medical treatments, and mind-body approaches.

The Benefits of Sex After Menopause

It’s important to focus not just on the challenges but also the unique opportunities that can arise in your sex life after menopause. Here are some of the “benefits of sex after menopause” that might surprise you.

  • Deeper Emotional Intimacy
With pressures related to fertility and raising children often receding, many couples find that intimacy becomes less about obligation and more about connection.
  • Health Improvements
Sex boosts cardiovascular health, reduces stress, and even strengthens the immune system. For menopausal women, regular intimacy can also maintain vaginal health and elasticity.
  • Sense of Freedom
Without the worry of pregnancy, many women feel more relaxed and liberated in their sexuality post-menopause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Interlude Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration combined with therapeutic instructions. In everyday life, we naturally enter this state without even realising it—whether it’s getting lost in a book, losing track of time while driving, or being completely absorbed in social media. This state, known as ‘trance,’ is not about swinging watches or stage tricks; it’s a practical and therapeutic tool.

During a Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy Session, I will guide you into this focused state to help you replace negative programming with positive alternatives. Through this process, we can effectively address issues like anxiety, fear, insomnia, and much more, empowering you to make lasting changes.

What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?

In a hypnotherapy session, you’ll typically be seated comfortably in a chair or lying on a couch with your eyes closed. I will guide you into a state of deep relaxation and heightened focus, known as a trance. In this receptive state, we can work together to transform how you perceive and handle your issues.

In your first session, I’ll explain how the brain works, how problems can develop, and what can be done to help. You’ll receive a relaxation audio to support the work we do in our sessions. As you relax, I’ll offer tailored suggestions and new ideas. While in trance, you may be asked to speak briefly or acknowledge experiences, but your thoughts remain private.

In subsequent sessions, we’ll start by discussing the positive aspects of your week and the progress you’ve made. You’ll be encouraged to envision how you’d like your life to be and identify small changes that could improve your situation. This sets the stage for deeper work in trance, guiding you toward lasting change. Throughout the process, you’ll remain in control and aware of your surroundings, experiencing a deep sense of calm and relaxation that many clients find highly enjoyable.

Is it Safe?

Rest assured, hypnotherapy is completely safe, and you are always in control. You cannot be made to do or say anything against your will, and if any suggestion doesn’t feel right, you can simply ignore it. If you were to feel uncomfortable at any point, you would naturally become consciously aware and could easily bring yourself out of the relaxed state. There’s no risk of getting stuck in a trance, and you’ll remain fully aware and safe throughout the session.

Many clients notice positive changes even after just one session, as unhelpful thought patterns start to fade away. While these initial shifts may be subtle, over time, clients often experience a heightened sense of calm, empowerment, and an overall more positive outlook on life.

How Do I Prepare For My Sessions?

Come with an open mind, believing in the effectiveness of hypnotherapy and a genuine desire to make positive changes. It’s beneficial to schedule sessions for times when you can fully engage with the hypnotherapy process.

Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session to avoid cancellation fees. Your commitment and respect for appointment times ensures the best outcome for your therapy.

Feeling tired is perfectly okay, as it may facilitate relaxation and deeper engagement with the therapy. However, please refrain from attending sessions if you are intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. For safety reasons, hypnotherapy cannot be conducted if you’re already in an altered state of consciousness. In such cases, sessions will be rescheduled, and cancellation fees may apply.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions required varies depending on your specific needs and the nature of your issue. Typically, clients find resolution within six to eight sessions. However, I always aim to ensure your treatment is both efficient and effective, minimising the number of sessions needed.

Smoking Cessation and Stopping Vaping are usually addressed in a single extended session, while certain Phobias can often be treated in four sessions. The Virtual Gastric Band Weight Loss Programme and HypnoBand® Weight Loss System are typically conducted over four to five sessions.

How Much Will It All Cost?

If you’re concerned about the price, know that hypnotherapy is more affordable than you might expect, especially when compared to the cost of not addressing your issue and of talking therapies alone.

Consider the true cost of allowing your problem to persist unchecked. Investing in your well-being now can lead to long-term benefits and a happier, more fulfilling life.

Our Initial Consultation (IC) is priced at £75 (60 Minutes) and conducted online.  Subsequent Sessions are £85 (50-60 Minutes) and conducted online or face-to-face in Sheffield.  Take advantage of Discounted Rates when you book 6 Session Packages, allowing you to save money while investing in your health and happiness.

I have partnered up with Network and can provide a 10% discount for Teachers, Carers, Health Service and Charity workers.

What Are My Next Steps?

Our journey begins with your Initial Consultation (IC) which you can conveniently book and pay for online.

This session is an opportunity for you to discuss your issue, explore your current feelings, personal goals, and ask any questions you may have. We’ll assess whether hypnotherapy is a suitable option for you and ensure you feel comfortable working with me.

We’ll explore the best approach for your unique situation, agree on a tailored treatment plan, and I’ll offer my professional opinion on the likely number of sessions needed.

You’ll also get a Free MP3 Audio which will support the work we do in-between sessions. Please DO NOT listen to this MP3 or any other Hypnosis Audio including Customised Hypnosis Audios whilst driving or operating any kind of equipment.
